Björk Announces New Album 'Fossora'

Björk is set to release her 10th studio album, Fossora, inspired by the grief she has experienced following the 2018 passing of her mother, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, according to a new interview with The Guardian.

Fossora, the feminine version of the Latin word for “digger,” will feature a guest appearance from Serpentwithfeet, along with backing vocals from Björk’s son, Sindri, and daughter, Doa. Notably, the album, which will arrive as the follow-up to the artist’s 2017 album Utopia, was written during the COVID lockdown, during which Björk returned to her home country of Iceland. “I don’t think I’ve been that much home since I was 16,” she told the outlet. “Guilty to admit it, but I was eating chocolate pudding every day. I got really grounded and I really, really loved it.”

While speaking to The Guardian, Björk called the forthcoming record a “mushroom album,” adding, “It’s like digging a hole in the ground. This time around, I’m living with moles and really grounding myself.” Specifically, two tracks on the album — “Sorrowful Soil” and “Ancestress” — are inspired by Hauksdóttir’s death.

Björk has not yet confirmed a release date for the album, though she did reveal that she is crafting a podcast series on her music, which is scheduled to debut alongside the LP this fall. Stay tuned for more updates.
