Following the launch of three concurrent exhibitions in Korea and preceding the release of his highly-anticipated “General Purpose Shoe,” Theaster Gates’ Rebuild Foundation and Anthony Gallery to present Tom Sachs: Furniture on display at the Stony Island Arts Bank located in the South Side of Chicago. The activation will present Sachs’ handmade sculptures for living, which he has designed and perfected over the last 30 years. A central theme presented in his creations is the idea of transparency. Each piece’s construction is conspicuously made to tell a clear story of the creation process.

“The more we can tell the story, the more we can invest in our things and build greater connections with the items and rituals in our daily lives,” writes the exhibition description. “Sachs challenges us to reflect on the objects we buy; the furniture we have, our sound systems, the music they play, and reminds us everything is art — it’s about the rituals that activate it.”

Erected in 1923, the bank was previously abandoned and was later meticulously restored by Theaster Gates to serve as a creative space to amplify the art and cultural artifacts from the South Side of Chicago.

Tom Sachs “Furniture” will run from July 7 to September 4. Tickets are available here. Coinciding with the exhibition is the launch of the designer’s genesis Rocket Factory NFT collection.
