This post contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel‘s highly anticipated masterpiece Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has several highlights in the movie, one of which features a long-awaited appearance of the Illuminati. In the comics, the Illuminati is a secret society group of superheroes composed of Professor X, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), Black Bolt, and Namor.

A lot of familiar faces were seen during the latest Doctor Strange movie. With the endless possibilities of the multiverse, theories and rumors have flowed all over the internet. Fans have predicted who would make an appearance in the sequel. Fans were right about Patrick Stewart’s appearance as an alternate Professor X but wrong about Tom Cruise playing the Iron Man role. Cruise almost played the billionaire playboy role instead of Robert Downey Jr.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, screenwriter Michael Waldron responded to the rumors of Tom Cruise playing the Iron Man role. “Yeah, that was totally made up. I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise! But I love Tom Cruise, and I said to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] at one point, I was like, Could we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man?” said Waldron. “I remember reading about that in Ain’t It Cool News back in the day, that Tom Cruise was going to be Iron Man.”

Waldron claimed that it’s “totally made up by the fans” but also claimed it would’ve been cool. The screenwriter confirmed that the studio never reached out to Cruise due to unavailability as he was filming the two upcoming Mission Impossible sequels.
