NIGO Discusses New Interests for Upcoming HBX for HUMAN MADE Pop-up in Hong Kong
Touching on life changes since joining KENZO and working on ‘I Know NIGO.’
Following the reveal of HUMAN MADE‘s Hong Kong-inspired double-deck tram tee, we now have a closer look at the Japanese brand’s first-ever pop-up in Asia at BELOWGROUND, Landmark, Hong Kong, launching May 13.
Based on NIGO‘s intention to let fans in Hong Kong experience the “future-vintage” concept of HUMAN MADE, the entrance welcomes visitors with light boxes that read “HUMAN MADE” and “HBX,” reminiscent of the Tokyo retail store. The 2,000-square-foot space sees vintage mosaic floor tiling with the HUMAN MADE logo and is characterized by an installation space and a retail floor area. While the former is lined by mannequins donning the latest season’s apparel, the latter is dressed in vintage blue accented with the iconic heart logo rugs and presents a variety of merchandise, from lifestyle goods to accessories. Mid-century-style lounge chairs and a coffee table built with HUMAN MADE’s signature crates sit in the center. Further decorating the walls are a “Gears For Futuristic Teenagers” neon light backdrop, a tiger paper mache trophy display, and an overhead logo banner.
Besides the limited-edition tram tee, products from the mainline’s SEASON 23 collection are also on display. Some highlights include basic T-shirts and sweatshirts adorned with the brand’s classic duck, pug, tiger, and polar bear motifs as well as embroidered workwear. Those opting for a head-to-toe outfit can choose from different styles of headwear like caps, beanies, and round bucket hats. Other standout trinkets include a tote bag-shaped paperweight and the heart logo rings in red, pink, yellow, green, and blue. Rounding out the range are offerings catered to everyday home needs, including storage boxes, carrying options, and bathroom amenities.
To learn more, we sat down with NIGO himself for a quick catch-up on how things have been leading up to this pop-up. The conversation can be read below:
HUMAN MADE is heavily rooted in workwear and Americana, all combined with your own flavor. Are there any new elements you are exploring or find equally as interesting these days?
NIGO: I get my inspiration from the past, as always. Lately, I have also been interested in vintage clothing from Europe. This is new for me.
Could you please give us a hint regarding the new character that will be introduced at the Hong Kong pop-up?
It’s very simple. It is the Year of the Tiger so I wanted a feline presence.
Have you noticed any changes in your routine since working with some of the bigger fashion houses, especially with your new role at Kenzo?
The biggest change is the amount of time spent making round trips from Tokyo to Paris. I sometimes travel to NY and LA as well (In-between Tokyo to Paris). This is not only for the two brands’ (HUMAN MADE and KENZO) creative direction, but I have music stuff and corporate branding, etc. Seriously, I need more time. All I want is to have more time for pottery.
Has this in any way changed how you operate HUMAN MADE?
Same old, same old.
It seems like you are getting back to your love for putting out music. What was the experience like in creating I Know NIGO?
It was a huge surprise. It’s more than I expected. I realized music and fashion are two sides of the same coin.
“Archive” is such a big word in our industry, and I think with Human Made going on to 12 years there is enough material to really look back on and celebrate. What were some of your most memorable releases to you?
The collaboration with Virgil Abloh’s “LV2” is still one of my favorites. It was a wonderful experience.
With your interests spanning multiple industries, are there any plans to continue in areas like food, or even something completely unrelated?
I love designing in everything that has to do with lifestyle — including food. Designing something involving urban living and community is my ultimate goal.
