This year is a momentous one for fans of the iconic AE86, as Toyota’s sports coupe, originally designed for on-track racing, is reimagined for modern day. To commemorate the revamped GR86, HYPEBEAST Car Club has launched a limited-edition T-shirt depicting the vehicle’s racing legacy in Japan’s underground drift scene. The jet black short-sleeve features “Toyota Red” and white custom graphic overlays detailing a brief history of the original 1984 AE86 alongside the present-day GR86. A custom-designed Toyota Gazoo Racing logo rests on the right breast panel, with accompanying HYPEBEAST Car Club and Toyota namesakes to the left and right of the sleeves.
The AE86 — referred to as “Hachi-Roku” by the Japanese market — revolutionized the blueprint for modern-day race cars and drifting enthusiasts in the mid-1980s. Popularized by legendary DRIFT driver Keiichi Tsuchiya, the reengineered 2022 model features a high-powered four-cylinder BOXER engine and a high-octane cabin experience. The sleek chassis modernizes the original AE86 model with a handsome exterior, unveiling Toyota’s new angular grille, coined “G Mesh,” with digitally-enhanced cabin amenities. Toyota’s 2022 GR86 boasts 228 horsepower with 184 pound-feet of torque and streamlined aerodynamics for near-perfect weight distribution. Through celebrating the model’s distinct racing legacy, Toyota accelerates the GR86 model to the fore of its present-day sports car lineup.
