In the 1970s, a very lucky selection of high-profile clients was hand-selected by Porsche to become a part of the Sonderwunsch Program, a “Special Wishes” platform that allowed clients to go wild with their custom Porsche creations. Today, the program is very rare and seldom exercised, but now the Porsche Club of America has been enlisted to create its own car alongside Porsche, dubbed the 911 Classic Club Coupe.

Based on the divisive 996-generation 911 — which split opinions because of its water-cooled engine and egg-shaped headlights — this custom now comes with plenty of nods to great 911s of the past. Notably, a ducktail spoiler is reminiscent of the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7, while design details such as a double-bubble roof, 18” “Fuchs” wheels and a unique “Sport Gray” colorway come together as an ode to the Type 997 911 Sport Classic.

Inside, you’ll find custom touches such as a plaque denoting its one-of-one credentials, custom door sills reading the model name, and more all appearing alongside black leather with “Slate Gray” accents and a perforated Alcantara headliner. “Club Blue” stitching echoing the lines on the exterior grace the interior, as does “911 Classic Club Coupe” embroidery on the seat headrests. Most interestingly, the 996’s original interior theme and styling remains, however it’s been updated with a new infotainment screen.

As this was originally the 996-gen 911 Carrera, it features a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six that produces 381 HP. Speaking on the project, Alexander Fabig, Head of Individualization and Classic says, “The Type 996 is unjustly overshadowed by the other 911 ranges. That’s why we were happy to choose it as the basis for demonstrating all the things we can do with Porsche Classic and the recently expanded Sonderwunsch program of Porsche AG.”

Tom Gorsuch, President of the Porsche Club of America added, “We wanted to take a different route — to base this unique project on a car less obvious — a modern classic — that would appeal to a slightly different group of enthusiasts. The fact that the finished Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe looks so cohesive, with the changes appearing so natural, is what’s really incredible about this challenging project.”
