TOMBOGO is headed to the future with its new Fall/Winter 2022 collection, unveiled at New York Fashion Week on Friday. Founder and creative director Tommy Bogo teamed up with hologram company PORTL to showcase 10 looks from his collection in a holographic device alongside a live in-person show.

Titled “Outside the Box,” the gender-neutral collection explores how the demands of the fashion industry have both excelled Tommy Bogo’s career forward while also fueling a natural urge to diverge from the industry’s limitations. Full-size, high-definition images of models wearing the designer’s pieces were projected from TOMBOGO’s Oakland, California studio into the holographic PORTL device.

“I first started doing fashion week during the pandemic,” he told HYPEBEAST. “I really started to get a feel for the calendar and ‘Outside the Box’ is my reflection of seeing the pros and cons of that.”

He continued: “I want to show that I’ve learned a lot from this process, but I also want to break out of the conventional traditions of a fashion week show. The concept is a hologram and it’s outside the box.”

The collection references concepts and silhouettes found in outdoor wear, while its garments serve as a juxtaposition of charting new creative territory and thinking inside the box. Jackets and trousers used for protection against the elements inspired the utilitarian aesthetic, while Bogo explored the use of old and new silhouettes and materials.

The design, as I like to call it, is ‘outerwear for creative exploration,’” he explained. “Waterproof nylons, sustainable and recycled nylons — everything is very waterproof-centric, hence the exploration theme.”

Footwear brand Saucony also worked with the designer to create the TOMBOGO x Saucony Butterfly model, a new silhouette that will be released in select global markets later this year. The shoe features a modular inner boot that can be removed from the outer clog shell, creating “multifunctional” dress items.
