Australian label Song for the Mute has flown under the radar for over a decade, siphoning its looks to the IYKYK crowd and creative industries that laud Melvin Tanaya and Lyna Ty’s brand as the undisputed champion of understated chic. Now, for Fall/Winter 2022, it presents the “22.2 LES OLYMPIADES” collection — and it’s not shying away this time around.

Following on from its SS22 “Avenue D’Ivry” collection, FW22 also pays homage to the creative director’s childhood, particularly focusing on the housing projects of Paris in the 1990s. Brutalism was contrasted with larger-than-life characters who lived between the concrete walls, and this juxtaposition anchors Song for the Mute’s FW22 offering. This season, Ty writes a love letter to this defining era that prevails throughout their work, tapping into the fashions, culture and aesthetics of her upbringing.

The result is nothing short of Song for the Mute’s finest-ever work. Formal silhouettes such as the grey overcoat are cut in denim and finished oversized to subvert traditions, while lab coats are served in bright pink acid-washed finishes making it fit for the towerblock rave. Elsewhere, that aforementioned coat is served in black satin as a reworked nod to formality, paired with matching trousers for a sophisticated edge, while a tracksuit is served in a popular shade of green and made from a square-knit, accented with the matching jacket to once again add a sense of formalness to an otherwise relaxed look.

Colorful fleece two-pieces are contrasted by the stark backgrounds that were shot by Darren McDonald, and for something truly ’90s we find a navy blue white-top-stitched padded nylon shellsuit, acid-washed denim, vinyl-clad suits, and a green rollneck and sunglasses look that wouldn’t go amiss in The Matrix.

Bringing the FW22 collection together is a sneak preview of Song for the Mute’s upcoming, and first, adidas Originals collaboration. The silhouette continues the ’90s theme, presenting itself in black and beige nylon, mesh, and suede alongside a dual-branded tongue tag and an adiPRENE-equipped midsole, identifiable by its quintessential OG adidas styling.

Song for the Mute’s FW22 “22.2 LES OLYMPIADES” collection can be seen above. Expect the collection to drop in the coming months, and stay tuned to HYPEBEAST for more information on that adidas Originals collaboration.

In other news, Supreme has offered a first look at its SS22 collection.
