Public School’s Maxwell Osborne Spreads His Wings With New Label “anOnlyChild” for FW22
Offering an elevated collection of inspired headwear.

Stepping out of his co-creating role with Public School New York, Maxwell Osborne continues to expand his design portfolio with the latest iteration of his new brand, anOnlyChild.
For New York Fashion Week, Osborne presented a gallery exhibition title “BORROWED CROWNS” – in partnership with longtime friend and hat designer Gigi Burris. The exhibit displayed a new collection of hats that Osborne and Burris co-designed for Fall/Winter 2022, including recycled materials shaped into luxury baseball caps, and bucket hats with leather pull-ties.
The new hat capsule comes on the heels of anOnlyChild’s recently released debut ready-to-wear collection, created entirely from deadstock materials.
Speaking about his inspiration behind the new brand and this season’s offerings, Osborne says, “For me, it’s taking a bit of street and redefining what a baseball cap is.” “Sometimes you can’t wear a baseball cap to a black-tie event, but you still want that look and that feel because that’s what you’re comfortable in,” he adds.
Burris also offered depth to the creation process behind their capsule, stating, “Max and I both care about making things locally, so every piece that we did was made in New York City. We worked with a carpenter to carve the hand-molded wood shape for the hat blocks, and made each hat with zero-waste.”
A supporting imagery campaign for the Osborne x Burris collab – seen in the gallery above – was shot by photographer Bon Duke, who is also a longtime friend of the duo. Noting the unclothed models appearing in the campaign, Duke shares, “There’s a structural sense to the hats, so we embraced the human body and found some symmetry and asymmetry in presenting that.”

Elsewhere in Fashion Week, Perry Ellis relaunched with a new take on American heritage.
