Netflix has greenlit a Japanese live-action film based on Tsukasa Hojo’s famed manga, City Hunter, which will be available for streaming worldwide.

Described as a “modern-day updated version of the manga” by Netflix, this is the first time ever that City Hunter receives a live-action adaptation in its native language. Throughout the years, the source material has spawned numerous adaptations from anime feature films, the 1993 Hong Kong live-action film starring Jackie Chan, a 2011 K-drama featuring Lee Min-ho to a 2018 French action-comedy movie. However, the original manga as well as the late ‘80s anime series remain the most popular amongst fans.

In the first visual released for the project, Ryohei Suzuki, best known for Hentai Kamen and Tokyo MER, will be playing Ryo Saeba, City Hunter’s protagonist. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the adaptation will be directed by Yuichi Sato, while the screenplay will be penned by Tatsuhiro Mishima, the screenwriter for Yu Yu Hakusho’s live-action series.

The City Hunter Japanese live-action film is expected to release sometime in 2024 on Netflix.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Amazon Studios is developing a live-action God of War series.
