Henry Cavill has officially announced that he will not be “returning as Superman.” He took to Instagram to release a statement, while DC Studios’ new head James Gunn also took to Twitter to confirm the news that the titular actor will not be joining their new universe. The news comes after Gunn took to Twitter to reassure fans that, “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

Since Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-CEOS of DC Studios, there have been major shakeups involving what the future DC Universe will look like. Gunn has often taken to Twitter to debunk rumors, including the recent one that Robert Pattinson‘s Batman will be a part of “their wider DC Universe.” Gunn has since said that “this is entirely untrue.” In regards to Cavill not returning as Superman, Gunn posted to his Twitter that, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about…Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

Cavill shared an emotional statement on Instagram, explaining his discussions with Gunn and Safran, confirming his departure from the role, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.” He said that he was initially “told by the studio to announce [his] return back in October” and hinted that at the time, it seemed as if it was set in stone. However, due to his recent conversation with DC execs Gunn and Safran, there appears be immense change to the universe they are trying to build, leading to the removal of Henry Cavill as Superman.

Take a look at the full statement from Henry Cavill below. His DC peers including Jason Momoa and Zachary Levi have commented on the post showing him support for his future endeavors.
