Following the success and significance of the Dakar 2022/23 Métier d’Art Collection, Chanel is restaging the show in Tokyo in 2023.

The collection was first unveiled at the former Palais de Justice in Dakar, Senegal earlier this month on December 6. The collection takes inspiration from the vibrant colors and richly ornate embroideries of beads and sequins, all while celebrating the spirit of the 1970s. Adding the Chanel touch, the collection had its fair share of flared trouser suits in the house’s signature textured tweeds as well as flowing dresses featuring floral motifs.

For the past three years, creative director Virginie Viard has been encapsulated by the art scene in the Senegalese capital, noting disciplines near and dear to the French luxury house, including in dance, music, drama and literature. The show in Dakar was of cultural significance for the brand, as it marked the beginning of an extensive cultural program and a jumping-off point for future ongoing exchanges between the French house and Senegal. Since 2002, Chanel’s Métier d’art collections continue to pay tribute to artisans across the world, promoting exceptional heritage and craftsmanship globally. The show in Dakar was attended by many big name celebrities including house spokesperson Pharrell Williams and others like Naomi Campbell, Whitney Peak, Nile Rodgers, Princess Caroline of Monaco and her daughter Charlotte Casiraghi. The 2022-2023 Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show was part of a three-day cultural program in the Senegalese capital.

Chanel has officially announced that it will repeat its Métiers d’Art show in Tokyo which “reaffirms the strength of its close ties with Japan.” This will mark the first international destination for the now-traditionally traveling show, originally initiated by the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. The show is planned for June 1 in the Japanese capital. More details to follow.
