Valentino Garavani's MS-2960 Sneaker Is a Luxury Take on Y2K Runners
Combing House cues like 16 studs and calfskin leather with retro graphics and shapes.
Pierpaolo Piccioli‘s Valentino has stepped into the footwear game with a heavy stomp, releasing styles like the macramè crochet sneaker, the One Stud, and a collaboration with Craig Green on the Rockstud X. Now, the House debuts its latest offering under the Valentino Garavani label, dubbed the MS-2960.
Informed by the early 2000s, this Y2K homage takes a retro-runner approach and dials up the luxury from there. Coming in either “White/Silver/Pastel Grey” or “Black/Graphite/White” colorways, we find a low-top shoe constructed from a tightly-woven mesh that’s overlayed with a ripstop-esque fabric and panels of calfskin leather, as 16 studs are arranged around each shoe.
Naturally, branding hits up the tongue, but the inclusion of MS-2960 stamping beneath it becomes a true nod to the running sneakers from 20 years ago. Likewise, the ultralight rubber sole unit is angled and shaped to the exacting standards of any proper retro running shoe, it coming to a point at the toe and growing in height and width towards the rear for added support and comfort on the heel.
Metallic details, particularly on the white colorway, highlight the leather-clad heel component before a singular stud makes its grand appearance, signifying that these are undoubtedly the work of Valentino. Thin laces, a printed insole, and sporty branding on the outsole round out the sneaker.
Valentino’s MS-2960 can be seen in the gallery above and bought online or in boutiques now for $1,150 USD.
