Margot Robbie revealed that Disney has parted ways with a previously-planned Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off film that saw the actress reunite with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, according to a new Vanity Fair interview.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie told the outlet about the proposed project with Disney. “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Hypebeast reported in June 2020 that Robbie was set to star in the stand-alone, female-led Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Variety had confirmed that Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all five Pirates films starring Johnny Depp, was on board the new project.

The now-scrapped film did not plan on centering Depp’s Jack Sparrow; instead, it aimed to introduce new characters inspired by the long-running Pirates ride at Disneyland, under the franchise banner. Notably, the franchise’s previous movies grossed $1.5 billion USD domestically and $3.07 billion USD globally.

Looking ahead, Robbie will next appear in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, alongside Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart.

In more entertainment news, Netflix has released an action-packed The Witcher: Blood Origin trailer.
