'Gears of War' Gaming Title To Receive Feature Film and Adult Animated Series at Netflix
As the video game franchise celebrates its 16th anniversary.
Gears of War is headed to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix has officially secured the streaming rights to the Xbox 360 video game franchise in partnership with The Coalition, the Canada-based developer responsible for the popular title, following months of negotiation. Fittingly, the news arrives on the 16th anniversary of the game, which debuted on November 7, 2006.
Netflix has several adaptations in store for the gaming saga. First, the streamer has plans to turn Gears of War into a full live-action feature film; and later, the platform will develop an adult animated series based on the game. If successful, Netflix will begin to curate further content under the partnership, according to THR.
Presently, there are no directors or producers tied to any of the aforementioned projects. As the franchise has sold more than 40 million copies across six titles and additional spin-offs, Netflix is confident that its slate of adaptations will be popular among the gamer’s fans.
In Gears of War, humanity faces extinction when an army of vicious underground creatures known as the Locust threaten to take over their planet. Fending off evil, disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix and his Delta Squad step up to humanity’s defense in a ferocious fight for survival.
Additional details, including loglines and release dates, are not yet available for either Netflix title.
