'Avatar: The Way of Water' Is on Track To Opening Upwards of $150 Million USD
Hits theaters on December 16.
As James Cameron‘s much-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is slated to arrive next month, the epic adventure film is slated to open to at least $150 million USD domestically when it debuts in theaters.
Variety has reported that early tracking sees the film on track to even reach $175 million USD or more during opening weekend. The film has been in the works for years, with Cameron’s perfectionism at the forefront of driving cinematic limits.
His first Avatar film opened to $77 million USD in 2009. It later became of the largest box office phenomenons in history, grossing $2.7 billion USD globally. It was recently reported that due to how expensive the film was to make, it would only break even if it becomes the fourth or fifth highest grossing film in history. This means, it has to at least overtake $2.05 billion USD.
Avatar: The Way of Water needs to aim high on opening weekend and is looking to exceed that threshold. The film opens on December 16.
