Margot Robbie has opened up about Lady Gaga possibly taking on the role of Harley Quinn in the Joker sequel Folie a Deux, telling MTV News that she is excited to see what the GRAMMY-winning artist will do with character.

The actress, who played Harley Quinn across several films in the DC Universe, compared the character to Macbeth or Batman in which several people will eventually take up the mantle as time goes by. “It makes me so happy, because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman, always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” she explained.

Robbie continued, “It’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth. I feel like, in not so many cases, are they female characters — Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, which I got to have a crack out as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.’” She added, “It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

It remains to be seen when Robbie will suit up as Harley Quinn again, but she confirmed last year that she’s ready to get back into the role after a short break — ideally for a spinoff from James Gunn. “I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one year period, but that was a while ago now,” she said. “I’m always ready for more Harley!”

Meanwhile, Gaga will star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Folie a Deux, which is reported to be a musical. Plot details remain under wraps but it is currently scheduled to premiere on October 4, 2024.
