How to Cook Pasta Consciously with Barilla’s Passive Cooker
Watch chef Pierce Abernathy whip up an appetizing kohlrabi spaghetti.

Italian pasta company Barilla is on a mission to make the widely-loved comfort food be a little more sustainable in the kitchen, with a brand new device that reduces active cooking time and saves energy.
The revolutionary, open source Passive Cooker is designed by the brand to be simply clipped onto a cooking pot lid where it can sync up to your smartphone to start the process. Once it detects boiling water, the pasta should be added and after two minutes, the device prompts you to turn off the stove. From then, the pot uses residual heat to finish cooking your pasta to perfection, with the app keeping an eye on your cooking time.
By utilizing technology, Barilla has turned a typically thoughtless method into a more considered way of cooking. It estimates that this device can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% – a small adjustment that if adopted by all pasta lovers, will create a sizable impact in the kitchen. Adding to its sustainable qualities, the Passive Cooker comes built with biodegradable materials and eco-batteries.
To put the new device to the test, Hypebeast calls on chef and recipe developer Pierce Abernathy. Known for cooking resourcefully and educating the masses on new ways to use ingredients, Pierce injects his usual flair into the video with a unique kohlrabi spaghetti recipe.
