$2 or $1,800 USD? AliExpress Knocks-Off Balenciaga's Lay's Pouch Bag

Replicas are chipping away at the viral accessory.

Balenciaga knows how to cause a media storm, and its Summer 2022 “The Mud Show” collection was nothing short of headline-grabbing moments. From Ye opening the show to the Le Cagole dress and jeweled clogs, the show was littered with some of Demna‘s most daring work to date — including the controversial $1,800 USD Lay’s-inspired pochette.

Now, AliExpress (the e-store infamous for its knock-off products at incredibly, and damagingly cheap prices) has released its take on the Lay’s bag. To avoid any obvious connections to the official product, AliExpress lists this piece as the “Funny Potato Chips Crossbody Handbag Women Canvas Shoulder Bag Mini Cartoon Printing Girl Envelope Bags Female Clutch Cute Purse.”

While it may not have such a catchy name, it does serve similar humorous and nonchalant vibes as Balenciaga’s piece. Here, a canvas construction has been used instead of premium leather, sporting green and yellow designs with Lay’s “branding” and the word “Olaslo” on it, alongside a graphic of the chips. A clip holding a webbing strap rounds things off, all for $2.03 USD.

We may not encourage the piece itself, but it sure is a moment that reminds us of many a Demna knock-off. For example, his work at Vetements resulted in the replica market producing its take on much of his collections, showing how the designer’s pieces are both daring and commercial.
