Tokyo’s DIESEL ART GALLERY lifted the veil on a new solo exhibition by emerging Japanese contemporary artist, Rei Nakanishi titled “TREE OF LIFE.”

Having immigrated to the U.S. when he was a teenager, Nakanishi worked as an assistant to New York-based Japanese artist Meguru Yamaguchi, while developing his own personal projects. Upon returning to Japan in 2019, Nakanishi began a new series called FLOWER OF LIFE that shows traces of sublimation that looks visually inspired by Yamaguchi, but done so in a figurative manner that has become unique to his own mark.

Nakanishi’s artistic style combines a unique painting expression that emphasizes the characteristics of acrylic paint with printing techniques centered on his experience as a graphic designer, all the while challenging the very definition of modern art.

“TREE OF LIFE” is on display at DIESEL ART GALLERY until April 21. To accompany the exhibition, the gallery will release collaborative merch, including catalogs and hoodies.
