Nike has officially filed a lawsuit against Lululemon, accusing the Canadian sportswear company of patent infringement for its at-home fitness mirror and other related mobile apps. Lululemon purchased Mirror for $500 million USD in 2020 at the start of the COVID pandemic in hopes to provide consumers with an additional option for in-home workouts.

According to CNBC, Nike claims that in 1983 it invented and filed for a patent application for a device that could test the speed of runners, the distance traversed as well as the elapsed time and calories expended back. Since then, the sportswear brand has also launched popular fitness mobile apps including Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club. By selling Mirror, Nike is adamant that Lululemon is infringing on multiple patents for their wall-mounted workout device.

A spokesperson from Lululemon has responded stating, “The patents in question are overly broad and invalid. We are confident in our position and look forward to defending it in court.” Earlier this week, both companies saw a decline in shares with Lululemon closing at 4.8% and Nike falling 2.5%. Lululemon is also currently in another legal battle with Peloton.
