NAMESAKE FW22 Insists That We Are Our Own Heroes With "Home Court" Collection
Inspired by “Pistol” Pete Maravich, Jason Williams, ‘Slam Dunk’, and more iconic cultural references.
Following the release of its “BLACK SUNLIGHT” collection for Fall/Winter 2021, NAMESAKE returns with yet another meaningful conversation, this time on the topic of success told through a fictitious anecdote of a team of basketball players and a marching band.
The latest lineup consists of NAMESAKE’s signature functional modern wear, all underlaid with a mesh base and technical fabric. Drawing inspiration from Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk manga series and star athletes like “Pistol” Pete Maravich to musicians like André 3000, the lookbook fuses basketball with music in elevated uniforms, such as classic tracksuits with fitted designs and leathered bombers with cinched waists. While the range nods to Jason Williams’ laidback style, the designs intentionally mix traditional plaid with modern Y2K edits and challenge conventional masculinity with oversized kilt-like cuts.
Adding to the extensive references are Japanese influences apparent in the leg warmers and the “Nori Wari Some” dye techniques used by Kyoto hand-dyeing specialists. From corduroy and denim to french terry, each garment is coated with unique 5mm dye pastes that create natural cracks after drying. Their vibrant colors are reminiscent of the exhibition basketball team Harlem Globetrotters and Sun Ra’s sci-fi film.
“We’re all winning trophies in our own way;’ said the Hsieh brothers, founders of the label brand. “You may not be a household name like star athletes and musicians, but you can be a true household name in your community.”
