Qatari Royal Family-Owned Porsche 959 Komfort Heads to Auction
This “Special Wishes” example isn’t just rare, it’s barely been used.
Following on from the just-seen 1996 Porsche 911 GT2 Clubsport that’s heading to auction at today’s RM Sotheby’s St. Moritz showcase comes yet another, and even rarer, Porsche: the 959 Komfort.
This particular example is finished in “Wine Red Metallic” over a “Burgundy” interior, produced under the Porsche Exclusive division known for granting requests under the “Special Wishes” program. Not any old customer could access this program, and not any old person could buy a 959 as it was pipped alongside the likes of the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari F40 back in the ’80s and ’90s, making it part of a then-holy trinity of exotic supercars.
Owned by a sheik of the Qatari Royal Family, this 959 Komfort was ordered alongside six more to complete a collection that each had a matching interior, but a contrasting exterior, creating a rainbow line-up of special-edition 959s. Considering its provenance, it was completed in August 1988 with a list of options that aren’t as outlandish as you’d imagine — just heated front driver and passenger sports seats with electronic adjustment and an anti-theft device were specced.
Despite its subtle upgrades, the Porsche doesn’t need much else as it’s already a star in its own right. Powering the classic is a 2.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine that produces 444 BHP, and despite its age, it has accumulated just 961km on the clock — meaning all that power has been barely tapped into.
Heading to RM Sotheby’s St. Moritz auction today, the 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort is expected to fetch between CHF 1,500,000 to CHF 1,700,000, or around $1.6m USD to $1.8m USD. Take a closer look at the car above, and find out more online.
