Madhappy Cooks Up an Ed Ruscha-Approved Capsule With Mr. Chow
Featuring the contemporary artist’s iconic 1973 work.

Los Angeles-based loungewear label Madhappy has linked up with kitchen connoisseur Mr. Chow for a capsule collection honoring his influence as a legendary restauranteur.
Famed for his classic keyhole spectacles and schoolboy haircut, Chow’s cultural imprint extends far beyond the confines of his restaurant’s walls. Though he is best known for his top-class eateries, Chow’s multi-hyphenated title also includes painter, photographer, filmmaker, actor and curator. Having collaborated with the likes of Cy Twombly, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and David Hockney in various capacities, Chow’s impact on the art world is undoubtedly top-shelf.
Honoring Chow’s creative prowess, Madhappy secured a rare license with Ed Ruscha — the food world legend’s close friend and collaborator — to utilize his artwork, MR. CHOW L.A. (1973), across the entire range of apparel.
“We are honored to have the rare opportunity of partnering with Ed Ruscha to feature his iconic artwork, MR. CHOW L.A. (1973), throughout our collection,” the brand wrote on Instagram. “The original work was produced in 1973 using organic substances on canvas, of which Ruscha refers to as his ‘recipes for colors.’ The recipe includes egg yolk, oyster sauce, red cabbage, soy bean paste, red bean paste over coconut milk, and red beets.”
The collection itself includes 12 styles of hoodies, sweatpants, T-shirts, shorts, button-ups and hats, each ranging from $35 USD to $185 USD. Ruscha’s lauded work claims prominence across top offerings in eggshell and black, while Madhappy’s signature, youthful aesthetic plays into collared shirts doused with colorful graphics. The collection will available to shop on August 17 at 3 p.m. EDT exclusively on Madhappy’s website. Additionally, a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Stop AAPI Hate Foundation.
