ICECREAM Joins Forces with Black Sand Surf for Exclusive Capsule Collection
Moving towards a more multicultural, harmonious future for the sport of surfing.
ICECREAM, the skate-centric sub label of Pharrell William’s Billionaire Boys Club, has joined forces with Black Sand Surf a burgeoning surf and arts collective based in Los Angeles. Aligning on an exclusive project that highlights the collective’s mission to “be the change we want to see in the water,” together the duo is merging creativity with activity and moving towards a more multicultural, harmonious future for the sport of surfing.
Focusing on community and diversity, Black Sand Surf aims to reset the tone of the surf community through advocating for love, positive messaging and community organizing in order to create a more welcoming space for Black and brown people who haven’t been exposed to surfing. “I’m an artist first, but surfing has changed the way I live my life,” said Justin “Brick” Howze, Co-Founder of Black Sand Surf. “When I surf, I feel closer to God. I wish that every human on Earth could have the opportunity to experience it in that way,” he adds. “Unfortunately, there have been systemic barriers of entry for people that look like us and social barriers of entry that still exist. Black Sand is our way of hopping over those barriers and reclaiming a space that was rightfully always ours to share. Our existence is resistance.”
As part of the exclusive capsule collection, ICECREAM tapped Alain Gakwaya, a Rwanda-native visual artist to design the graphic T-shirt and customize a one-of-one surfboard with his signature Rwandan-inspired artwork. For those looking for a fresh take on summer essentials, standout styles from the collection will include both Billionaire Boys Club and ICECREAM swim shorts which have been fashioned in on-trend colorways along with beach towels and the limited-edition “Set the Tone” T-shirt.
In the gallery above, check out the exclusive collection. The T-Shirt, which retails for $60 USD, will be available for pre-order on the brand’s site for the next 48 hours with $30 USD being donated to Black Sand Surf to support the initiative. Additionally, one lucky winner will receive a customized surfboard created by Alain Gakwaya.
