This One-Off 1989 Ferrari F40 Is a Beauty in Blue

Just 1,311 Ferrari F40s were built between 1987 and 1992, and it’s safe to say that if you have ever seen one it’s probably been in the signature red shade of “Rosso Ferrari.” So, finding one in blue (inspired by Porsche’s “Aqua Blue Metallic”) is beyond rare — and now this single example is up for sale.

The F40 has quite a story attached to it, too. Starting life in Nyon near Lake Geneva in 1989, this model was then taken to Japan in 2004 and was converted into the F40 LM by Liberty Walk. In 2014, Joe Macari Performance Cars London bought the Liberty Walk-bodied car and brought it back to the U.K. where it was purchased again on the basis that it was returned to its original condition, and painted blue. This was at the request of the photographer, YouTuber, and racer Sam Moores, who is known globally for owning the “F40BLU” machine.

While not in Concours condition (because no F40 came in blue and it’s had a lot of faithful restorations), this example is still a fine F40 by all means. It’s fitted with a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged and water-intercooled V8 engine that produces 471 HP and 577 Nm of torque, which is good for 0-62 MPH in just under four seconds and a claimed top speed of 201 MPH.

The F40 is known as being a V8-powered go-kart for the road, and as such features a very sparse interior. The carbon fiber tub is exposed, bucket seats are described as being “surprisingly supportive and comfortable,” and little else is going on. On the outside, however, it’s all about the drama, with wings, air ducts, and sculptural lines dressing the car in the only way an ’80s supercar could pull off.

As of writing the auction has just under four hours left (ending at 7:30 p.m. BST/2:30 p.m. ET), and is currently sitting at £765,500 GBP (approx. $1.05m USD) on The Market by Bonhams’ website. Take a closer look at “F40BLU” above.
