10 Must-Watch TV Shows Premiering In 2021

The second half of 2021 looks to be a promising one in the world of entertainment, with all the major networks and streamers offering an exciting slate of both new and returning TV shows.

The forthcoming months will see the final seasons of Netflix‘s Money Heist, which is split into two volumes, AMC‘s The Walking Dead, which will take its final bow after 11 years on the air, NBC‘s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and possibly BBC‘s Peaky Blinders. Meanwhile, shows like HBO‘s Succession, which egged on the internet’s fascination with Cousin Greg, Showtime‘s Billions, FXX’s Archer, Netflix’s The Witcher and Apple TV+‘s six-time Emmy nominated Ted Lasso will all return with brand new seasons after experiencing production delays due to COVID-19.

Succession

Release date: Fall 2021
Where to watch: HBO

The notorious Roy family is finally returning to our screens after more than a year. The season two finale of Succession saw Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) publicly throw Waystar Royco CEO Logan (Brian Cox) under the bus for the cruises incidents, essentially waging an all-out war against his father. Season three will continue to feature the rest of the Roys and their extended family, including Marcia (Hiam Abbass), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Connor (Alan Ruck), Shiv (Sarah Snook), her husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfayden) and the adored Cousin Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun). Meanwhile, Alexander Skarsgård and Adrien Brody will also be joining the drama-comedy as Lukas Matsson, a tech founder and CEO and as Josh Aaronson, a billionaire activist investor. An official release date is yet to be announced.

Money Heist

Release date: September 3 and December 3

The final season of Netflix’s hit TV show Money Heist will be split into two parts, with Volume 1 premiering on September and Volume 2 premiering on December 3. Season five will see a confrontation between Alicia Sierra and The Professor as she finds his hideout at the end of the fourth season, while The Gang is still around the Bank of Spain in an attempt to avenge Nairobi. “We decided to work in an extremely aggressive genre, putting The Gang on the ropes. In volume 2, we focus more on the emotional situation of the characters. It is a journey across their sentimental map that connects us directly to their departure,” Álex Pina shared in a statement.

Ted Lasso

Release date: July 23
Where to watch: Apple TV+

After getting relegated at the end of the first season, the ever-optimistic Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is continuing his journey as AFC Richmond’s manager in season two of the Apple TV+ series. Joined by Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), team owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), operations director Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift) and assistant coach Nathan Shelley (Nick Mohammed), Lasso and AFC Richmond are motivated to get re-promoted next season and eventually win the Premier League. However, there’s also the matter of veteran Roy Kent’s (Brett Goldstein) future as he suffered a knee injury during the final match of the season, and the rise of young star Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) at Manchester City.

What If…?

Release date: August 11
Where to watch: Disney+

Marvel is offering a look at a completely different MCU in What If…?, an upcoming TV show that will reimagine that biggest plotlines and characters in the expansive universe. The first season will comprise of 10 episodes and feature some of the live-action actors guest star as their characters, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger and more.

The Walking Dead

Release date: August 22
Where to watch: AMC

After 11 years and countless heartbreaking character deaths, AMC’s The Walking Dead is officially coming to an end. If you’re not caught up, the final season of the long-running TV series still features early survivors like Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), along with the return of Maggie Greene-Rhee (Lauren Cohan) after a short absence. Season 11 also has fans wishing to finally see Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) again after his presumed death in season nine; he will hopefully come back with Michonne (Danai Gurira) after she left in season 10 to find Rick.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine 

Release date: August 12

Join Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and the fictional 99th precinct of the NYPD for one last heist in the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Not a lot is known about the comedy cop show’s eight season, except for Jake and Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) journey as parents after giving birth during the high-energy finale of season seven. Samberg previously revealed he was “rethinking” the future of the final season in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and Terry Crews shared that they scrapped four episodes from the season when the BLM movement began.

The Witcher

Release date: December 17
Where to watch: Netflix

Netflix announced that the second season of its Polish-American drama fantasy, The Witcher, is finally premiering on December 17. The upcoming season will see Henry Cavill reprise his role as Geralt of Rivia and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and the bigger involvement of Freya Allan as Cintra, who finally met Geralt during the season one finale. “I played the Season One way deliberately, which was [Geralt] out in the wilds and without the opportunity for vast swathes of dialogue,” Cavill said during Witchercon. “I thought it best to be the man who says less because that seems like he’s thinking more. And that was the intention with that. But once you get into a scenario with Cirilla, and the Witchers and his home space and with those people who he already knows, I was of the opinion that you had to let him be verbose and be philosophical and speak more and be intellectual, because that’s what he is. He’s not just a big old white-haired brute.”

Billions

Release date: September 5
Where to watch: Showtime

The second half of the fifth season of Billions will finally be airing on September 5 after almost a one-year hiatus, with the remaining five episodes highlight the tense situation between Bobby (Damian Lewis), a beard-less Chuck (Paul Giamatti), Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) and Michael (Corey Stoll). Season five initially premiered in May 2020 but was put on hold due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, its sixth season is currently in suspended production.

Welcome back to the danger zone — FXX officially announced an August 25 premiere for the 12th season of Archer. The previous season finally saw superspy Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) awaken from his coma after three seasons, and he attempts to readjust to the world of living while physically recovering. As exciting as the news is, however, Season 12 is also bound to be bittersweet as it’s the last one that features the late Jessica Walter (Mallory Archer).

After a delayed production, fans can finally expect Peaky Blinders to return later this year or in early 2022. The Shelby family is returning “with a bang” as they face internal betrayals and the rise of Oswald Mosley. “Thank you to all the Peaky fans who have been so unwaveringly supportive and patient. Steve [Knight]‘s scripts are incredible and mark the end of an epic story that has entranced audiences since it first started in 2013, but the world of Peaky Blinders will most definitely live on,” executive producer Caryn Mandabach said in a previous statement. In addition to dealing with COVID-19 and production restrictions, the cast and crew also suffered the devastating death of Helen McCrory, who portrayed the role of Aunt Polly, in April 2021. It is currently unknown how they will address the actress’ death on the show.
