De Bethune Bets on a Return to International Travel With DB25GMT Starry Varius

The dual timezone complication is the frequent flier’s best friend.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when international travel became a distant memory for most, De Bethune set itself the challenge of designing a new travel watch.

The DB25GMT Starry Varius features the brand’s 29th unique in-house movement and represents the first time a complication has been added to the DB25 Starry Varius watch.

The central section of the watch’s dial features the Starry Varius’ signature Milky Way of polished white gold orbs set into a thermally blued titanium background and is framed by a date ring with its own “jumping” centrally mounted pointer, which can be adjusted with a quick corrector set into the case at the six o’clock position.

The watch’s home or reference timezone is represented by a microsphere set within a trench in the dial, moving against a 24-hour scale, while the local timezone is indicated by a more traditional arrangement of blued hour and minute hand against a 12-hour scale. The microsphere rotates at 6am and 6pm to reflect the rotation of the Earth, changing from night (blued titanium) to day (polished pink gold) and back again.

Inside the watch’s 42mm polished grade 5 titanium case, the handwound DB2507 movement uses two barrels and a silicon escape wheel to achieve a five-day power reserve.

The DB25GMT Starry Varius is available now via De Bethune retailers, priced $105,000 USD.

In other watch news, MadeWorn has spent the past 18 months punishing Timex watches for the brand’s latest American Documents special edition.
