Tsuyoshi Nakano — the Japanese streetwear trailblazer behind “Urahara Culture” and the googly-eyed fashion label SKOLOCT — has unveiled a new collaboration with Masafumi “Bebetan” Watanabe’s Shibuya boutique, Dayz. In homage to Nakano’s industry conception at the helm of NGAP, the collection offers a slew of one-off pieces that celebrate Japanese style in the 1990s.

Nakano first made waves in the fashion industry while Japanese streetwear was still in its early stages. Frequenting a nightclub alongside A Bathing Ape founder NIGO, UNDERCOVER designer Jun Takahashi and Ura-Harajuku leader Hiroshi Fujiwara, the burgeoning designer had established close relationships with fashion’s soon-to-be elite before their respective brands went mainstream. In fact, Takahashi hosted the initial exhibition that introduced Nakano’s NGAP to the streetwear world and NIGO helped the visionary distribute and sell about ¥10 million JPY worth of bags, before he ultimately moved on to create SKOLOCT in 2007.

The aforementioned, oversized bags— NGAP staples, originally created to satisfy Nakano’s needs as a painter — have been remastered for the new collaboration, along with a selection of explorative furniture and apparel pieces. Most notably, a massive daybed constructed in the silhouette of the classic bags, custom-made and painted by Nakano himself, doubles as both a forward-thinking art piece and a functional daytime sleeper. Made from artificial suede and paraffin-coated canvas, the bag-turned-bed boasts built-in pockets and all-white NGAP branding atop a vivid orange facade.

Elsewhere, a set of leather chairs resembling taped-up cardboard boxes (a nod to Nakano’s urban street art origins) shape to the user’s body upon use. The chairs are sold individually for ¥71,500 – ¥143,000 JPY (roughly $650 – $1,300 USD) and the bed is marked at ¥880,000 (just over $8,000 USD).

The NGAP x SKOLOCT capsule collection is now available to shop at Dayz Rayard Miyashita Park on Dayz’s webstore.

In other fashion team-ups, Palace and Mercedes-AMG link up for a collaborative car and apparel capsule.
