MCM Enlists SAMBYPEN For Graffiti-Inspired Collection
Reworking the brand’s signature monogram prints.
The latest in a series of collaborative projects, MCM taps Seoul-based artist SAMBYPEN for its Spring/Summer 2021 collection celebrating Berlin’s renowned graffiti scene reinterpreted to channel Seoul’s diverse sub-cultures.
Drawing from the brand’s rich heritage by utilizing its light-hearted but vibrant motifs, SAMBYPEN celebrates MCM’s core iconography, reworking its signature monogram prints with his aesthetic. Referencing the essence of street art, the logos represent the journey from Berlin to Seoul through three characters: Henry the Timid Lion (inspired by the Munich Lion), Kaiser the Blunt Puppy (inspired by Wilhelm II & the symbol of Germany) and Haru the Wicked Rabbit (inspired by the MCM Rabbit & German Easter Hare). Speaking on the inspirations behind the latest collaboration, SAMBYPEN says “My focus has always been to observe yet subvert this dynamic by employing unabashed and sarcastic designs against traditional iconography.”
Comprised of an array of women’s, men’s and unisex ready-to-wear garments as well as accessories and lifestyle items, the range fuses street art with luxury. Covering every facet of functionality from cushions and rugs to cargo pants and loungewear, the collection boasts a color palette of cobalt blue juxtaposed with primary pastel hues and earth tones amongst its graphic-led designs. Not only symbolizing unbound freedom and spontaneity, the range also embraces the beauty of contrast focusing on several varying aspects including day and evening wear to intimate and eccentric fits.
The SAMBYPEN x MCM collaborative collection is available to purchase globally now from official stockists and on the brand’s website.
