Shinola Marks Godfather of Snowboarding's Birthday With Commemorative Set
Epic set includes a unique Shinola Duck watch and replica of Burton’s first production snowboard.
Shinola and Burton Snowboards have assembled a gift set honoring the memory of Jake Burton Carpenter, the man who launched the eponymous snowboard brand and is widely considered to be the founder of the sport.
The Jake Burton Carpenter Shinola Gift Set includes a custom version of Shinola’s rugged “adventure-proof” Duck Watch, a full-size replica of Burton’s first production snowboard and a coffee table book filled with “images and stories gathered from family, friends and world-class photographers.”
“After losing Jake to reoccurring cancer over a year ago, a small group of family and friends poured their hearts into creating this gift set as a tribute to my husband,” said Donna Carpenter, owner of Burton. “It all started with my youngest son Timi talking to Shinola founder and Jake’s close friend, Tom Kartsotis, about dedicating a Shinola Great Americans Series watch to Jake. The vision for the project grew exponentially from there. We were all deep in the grieving process, so working on this together was cathartic and helped us stay close to Jake. The end result is a true reflection of Jake’s passion, creative spirit and pure love of life.”
The 42mm stainless steel Shinola x Burton JBC Duck Watch features a muted matte blue dial and unidirectional, rotating bezel, an Argonite 713 quartz movement, extra thick sapphire crystal and the Burton logo at the 12 o’clock position. The watch is supplied on a stainless steel bracelet with an additional fabric strap and springbar tool to swap it over.
On the reverse is a relief image of Burton riding the Burton Backhill, or BB1, the first snowboard produced by the brand. The set includes a full-size display replica of that board, while the watch and book are packaged together in a leather cooler bag, something inspired by Burton’s idea of packaging his company’s snowboard boots in a reusable backpack cooler rather than a cardboard box.
The set drops today, on what would have been Burton Carpenter’s 67th birthday, and is available in “very limited quantities” via Shinola and Burton, priced $1,200 USD.
