Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming original film Concrete Cowboy: a father-son drama starring Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin. The film releases globally April 2 and was inspired by the novel Ghetto Cowboy by G. Neri and the real-life stories of the Fletcher Street Stables: a horsemanship community in North Philadelphia which has existed for more than a century.

McLaughlin stars as Cole, who is expelled from his Detroit school and sent to live with his estranged father Harp in Philadelphia. The story unfolds as Cole is torn between a friendship with his troubled cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome) and his growing investment in rehabilitating horses at the stable, which is threatened by gentrification.

The film, which was also selected for the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, arrives as part of the suite of new original content Netflix promised in January. The slate of 70 films — at least one per week — will also include Leonardo DiCaprio, Idris Elba, Eric Andre, Jennifer Lawrence and more in headlining roles.
