The company released a statement citing, “The safety and well-being of our competitors, organizers, employees, local communities, and partners [continue] to be our top priority and is the primary consideration with every decision we make.”
The Pokémon Company is reportedly already planning its 2022 World Championship event and is expected to take place in London. The championships were set to feature competition in both Pokémon trading card and video games, including a one-on-one fighting game, Pokkén Tournament which had “satellite qualifiers leading up to the main event in London.”
The event will now focus on organizing an online Pokémon Players Cup event in light of the cancellation of the in-person tournament. Those who were already invited to compete in 2020 will see their invitations roll over to the 2022 event.
The official announcement adds, “Thank you to our millions of players, fans, organizers, and Professors around the world for their continued support and understanding. The Pokémon International Championships and Pokémon World Championships are meaningful occasions to us and the player community, and we look forward to when we can all see each other and compete again.”
