Maison Margiela's Surgical Slip-On Mule Is a Sign of the Times
Everyone’s favorite indoor footwear style just got a luxe lockdown-ready makeover.

Maison Margiela‘s minimalism has fared well for the brand in creating its “if you know, you know” image, but never has its aesthetic been translated so aptly. Welcome to Margiela’s latest footwear offering, the Surgical Slip-On Mule in “White/Off White.”
Blurring the lines between lockdown’s essential footwear and fashion week chic, the mules come with a nylon upper that’s covered in a cloth overlay with an elasticated band incorporated into the design. The result is something that bags up, or almost quilts and creases from the rounded toe, looking like a surgical covering or a face mask of sorts.
However clinical the mules may seem, they are — of course — matched with various luxurious details. For example, the soles are made from suede, and inside they’re fully lined in leather where you’ll find gold-toned stamping of the Made in Italy credentials and sizing. What’s more, there’s even a small singular stitch at the rear of the mule’s heel, once again proving that minimalism is everything for Maison Margiela.
