The thriller is based on David Grann’s non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, which explores the brutal murders of several wealthy Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the ’20s. Reports state that the 32-year-old actor will take over DiCaprio’s initial role (he is now a secondary lead instead) of Tom White, the lead FBI agent who has been assigned to investigate the murders.
Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone will portray Mollie Burkhart, an Osage married to Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) who is the nephew of a powerful local rancher (De Niro).
Scorsese is producing and directing the film for Apple Studios and Imperative Entertainment, with Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas and DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions producing alongside the filmmaker.
