Ronan Bouroullec‘s abstractions contain a certain language. Silhouettes and color combinations that at first glance appear familiar, yet evade any figurative categorization. Typically working across sinuous gestures and industrial design work with his brother, Erwan, the French artist has dabbled in ceramic reliefs for the first time in a new exhibition at Galerie Kreo.

“23 bas-reliefs” operates somewhere between painting, sculpture and design, featuring work with beveled clay edges that the writer and poet, Josh Ascherman, described as feeling “digital and also deeply analog.” Each of the 23 artworks was made first through carving, glazing and then harmoniously assembled on mounted boards and frames.

The Paris-based artist allowed the individual pieces to fire in the kiln before assembling the relief, embracing the unpredictability of the process to take center stage. The compositions, “Like poetry,” Ascherman added, are “subject to randomness.” “23 bas-reliefs” is on view at Galerie Kreo until January 4, 2022.
