A Backstage Look at Dior's Fall 2022 Show in London
Celebrating the work of Jack Kerouac and the beat generation.
Kim Jones returned to London to show Dior‘s Fall 2022 collection, unveiling items heavily inspired by American author Jack Kerouac. The show was a celebration of the legendary beat generation writer, and his influence was clear in the setting of the show, with a runway recreating the single-scroll manuscript on which he wrote On the Road back in 1957.
Kerouc’s face also appears throughout the collection, with knitwear displaying his image and the years in which he was alive, while other references are more subtle. The theme is alluded to through nods to American sportswear — in particular Dior-branded football jerseys — while V-neck jumpers and ties recall the beat generation itself.
In the show notes, Dior described the collection as “balancing the excellence of the atelier with the spirt of freedom, the refinement of a Parisian fashion house with the modern laid-back appeal of American sportswear.” These contrasting influences come together to create a new Americana, with collegiate-influenced outerwear, Fair Isle knitwear and leather jackets (featuring the original On the Road cover).
The Fall 2022 collection was rounded out by accessories and footwear that continued to mix the beat influences with Dior’s house codes. References to On the Road‘s spirit of adventure included the addition of climbing rope to the Saddle Bag, and the introduction of a new hiking boot silhouette.
