The 2021 League Championship Series Kicks Off This Week

This week kicks off the 2021 season for the League Championship Series. The LCS is North America’s largest professional Esports league, in the world’s most popular Esport, League of Legends. This year, the LCS has a new look, format, and a lot of new players because, after 10 years, some of the League’s most iconic athletes have now retired. So 2021 is all about finding the next generation of League stars.
The 2020 Summer Champions, TSM, will return with their young star Spica, supported by 2020 World Finalist SwordArt. The team will be led by recently-retired LCS legend Bjergsen, now as head coach. TSM’s rival and last year’s Spring champions, Cloud9, will look to take back their title, now with the support of European superstar and world finalist Perkz.
Team Liquid, which is part owned by Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, return with a new team of international stars and Tactical, the 2020 rookie of the year. Team Liquid won back-to-back-to-back-to-back championships in 2018 and 2019. FlyQuest, two-time LCS finalists are back with a new roster including Josedeodo, one of the first players to join the LCS from the Latin American league, the LLA.
While the Golden Guardians, owned by the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, are rebuilding with a rookie team, including League of Legends college champion Niles, and 100 Thieves, co-owned by Drake, rebuilt their roster with most of the 2020 Golden Guardians team. 100 Thieves is led by one of Australia’s top players, FBI, and former LCK champion Ssumday. Evil Geniuses, Dignitas, Counter Logic Gaming, and Immortals make up the rest of the LCS teams, who will be looking to make a splash in one of the most competitive LCS seasons ever. The LCS season runs from January through Summer, with major tournaments in January, April, and finally, the LCS Championship in August.
