2021’s Chinese New Year is honoring the year of the Ox, so adidas Originals has decided to go all-out with its cow print pony hair-covered ZX 420 sneakers.

Served in a fitting “Cloud White/Lush Red/Core Black” colorway, adidas Originals’ sneaker sports a full cow print upper with signature adidas design cues, for example crafting the Three Stripes out of shiny white and red TPU and placing a Trefoil-branded tongue tag on top.

However, in honor of Chinese New Year adidas switches things up at the rear with “Lush Red” embroidery, and on the tongue’s lace lock, a golden hoop that nods to that found in a cow’s nose. The theme is continued onto the Torsion-less EVA midsole where you’ll notice a white and red split design, while more “Lush Red” has been added onto the sock liner for a sophisticated finish.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting the legacy and importance of this silhouette. The ZX 420 was the final adidas sneaker to be made before ZX shifted its product alignment to a more sporty territory with the integration of Torsion tooling, as such making this 1988 sneaker one of the great originals. It also seldom reappears, only being revived recently thanks to Hanon and a few others following its resurfacing back in 2015. As such, the ZX 420 is a pretty rare shoe, and is now even more limited thanks to this CNY makeover.

Take a look at the adidas Originals ZX 420 in “Cloud White/Lush Red/Core Black” above, and pick up a pair for yourself from adidas Originals’ website on January 31 for £85 GBP (approx. $116 USD).
