Following the loose 1993 live-action adaptation starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.
During its recent Corporate Management Policy Briefing, Nintendo confirmed that is working on an animated film adaptation of its Super Mario Bros. game franchise. Noting “production is moving ahead smoothly,” Universal Studios‘ subsidiary Illumination Entertainment is already working on the film with funding from both Nintendo and distributor Universal Pictures.
Although not much about the project is known at the moment, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is working closely on the project with Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination. “Scheduled for theatrical release in 2022,” the CG feature looks to focus on Miyamoto’s “original creative voice” to create a standout Hollywood adaptation.
