The coronavirus pandemic has taken a major toll upon the global art sector with museums and galleries facing drops in sales revenues for the 2020 fiscal caused by closures during the pandemic. Renowned international art dealer Hauser & Wirth is spearheading an Artists for New York initiative to raise money to support non-profit visual arts organizations across New York City that have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19.

The project gathers works by artists within and outside of the gallery’s program which will be sold to benefit these culturally-significant institutions: Artists Space, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Dia Art Foundation, The Drawing Center, El Museo del Barrio, High Line Art, MoMA PS1, New Museum, Public Art Fund, Queens Museum, SculptureCenter, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Swiss Institute, and White Columns.

Over 100 artists have contributed works to Artists for New York such as Jenny Holzer, Derrick Adams, George Condo, Cindy Sherman, Sarah Sze, Rashid Johnson, Erik Parker, among many others. From October 1-22, Hauser & Wirth will unveil all of the artworks donated to the project online. Many of the pieces will also be shown to the public at the gallery’s two New York outposts at 542 West 22nd Street and 32 East 69th Street.

“As we looked ahead to the fall and how best to emerge from this challenging time, it was clear to Iwan, Manuela, and myself, as well as our artists, that we couldn’t simply proceed with ‘business as usual’ without also addressing the very real needs of the non-profit organizations that have become our community since our gallery first opened in New York City in 2009. For us, ‘Artists for New York’ is a way to support and give back to that community at a critical moment,” said Marc Payot of Hauser & Wirth.
