Phoebe Bridgers, Beck and More Perform for Daniel Johnston Livestream Tribute
Also featuring a home video of Johnston writing “When I Met You.”
Honoring Daniel Johnston, who passed a year ago on September 11, 2019, several musicians have recently come together to celebrate the legendary artist with a livestream tribute.
Organized by Electric Lady Studios, Honey, I Sure Miss You is fronted by Phoebe Bridgers, Beck and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. The livestream began with a heartwarming message from Johnson himself, saying, “Hello, this is a recorded message. I am Dan Johnston. Though I am not with you physically, I am with you in heart. With all my heart. And I am thinking about you in hope that you are doing fine.”
Bridgers was joined by Harrison Whitford to perform “Peek-a-Boo,” while Tweedy delivered “Cold Hard World” and Beck offered “True Love Will Find You in the End.” Other performers in the tribute included Adam Green, Devandra Banhart and Jessie Harris and Stranger Things star Maya Hawke. Closing out the livestream was a home video of Johnston creating “When I Met You” on January 1, 1991, writing original lyrics while performing it on a piano.
