Junya Watanabe MAN Preps FW20 Frankenstein Patchwork Pieces
Accompanied by collaborations with Levi’s, Carhartt, Pirelli and Campagnolo.
For his Fall/Winter 2020 collection, COMME DES GARÇONS alum Junya Watanabe reached out to a series of admired heritage labels, expanding his far-reaching collaborations. Accompanying items co-created with longtime friends Levi’s, Canada Goose, Carhartt, Watanabe also linked with several Italian companies — including motorcyclists Moto Guzzi, automotive manufacturer Pirelli and Campagnolo’s bike experts — to underscore the season’s adventurous motif.
Hybridized blazers and coats inform much of Watanabe’s latest offering, which infuse menswear staples with high-contrast textiles sources from bombers, chore coats and down jackets. This yields some pretty wild results, as bright blue quilting takes over an otherwise understated salt-and-pepper herringbone wool jacket and striking orange bomber panels interrupt a brown houndstooth blazer. High visibility seams, pockets and zippers lend extra functionality and flair to the updated outerwear.
Collaboration is key to the Watanabe aesthetic, granting his seasonal fare authenticity amidst the transformative patchwork. Legacy labels like Pirelli and Campagnolo offer their branding to a series of combo items and a fire-red T-shirt, while Carhartt provides a classic duck canvas jacket (here merged with a patterned coat) and Levi’s delivers gently flared denim jeans, complete with contrasting wool pockets on the rear. Elsewhere, a timeless Canada Goose snow parka is revamped with dangling D-rings and hi-vis tape, perhaps the most conventional style in the selection.
