Detroit to Launch Month-Long Design Festival Featuring Over 175 Participants
Programming includes exhibitions, workshops and more.

To celebrate Detroit’s designation as the first and only UNESCO City of Design stateside, Design Core Detroit will launch a month-long event called Detroit Month of Design (MoD). Taking place through September 1-30, the festival encompasses over 175 participants alongside 65 events and special projects. The programming also includes talks, tours, exhibitions, workshops, installations and more.
“Design Core Detroit sees designers as creative problem-solvers who can work hand-in-hand with business, government and communities to develop human-centered and practical solutions,” as per a statement by Design Core Detroit. “In the midst of a global pandemic and widespread protests against racial inequality, design solutions that prioritize inclusivity, adaptability and equity have never been more important. This year’s programming will reflect on and explore design solutions to the myriad of challenges faced by Detroit and the global community since the start of 2020.”
Coinciding with the festivities, MoD will also announce the winners of the 2020 Design in the City Competition. A collaboration between Design Core Detroit and Gucci that offered emerging fashion and accessory designers the opportunity to display an installation of their work at commercial spaces throughout the city during the event. Supported by a $45,000 grant from Gucci Changemakers Impact Fund, the competition also grants the winning designers with business and marketing support, mentorship, technical assistance and distribution opportunities.
