Cordae and Roddy Ricch had monstrous 2019s. Roddy scored international superstardom with his hit single “The Box” and followed that success up with critical acclaim for his debut album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial. Meanwhile, Cordae was nominated for Best Rap Album at the GRAMMYs for his own debut project, The Lost Boy. Now they’ve joined forces for their new single “Gifted” featuring a music video by Lyrical Lemonade‘s Cole Bennett.

The new single arrives in honor of Cordae’s 23rd birthday and also taps Ant Clemons for additional background vocals. “Gifted” is an upbeat celebration of all that the two artists have accomplished in such a short period of time while also giving thanks to their numerous blessings. It’s notably the first track since Cordae dropped the YBN from his name following the disbandment of his former crew. While there has yet to be an official statement on the matter, YBN Nahmir took to Twitter to declare “They left this YBN sh*t in the gutter,” while confirming with fans that YBN Almighty Jay and Cordae weren’t on the best of terms.

The video’s final frame ends on a quote from political activist and revolutionary Huey P. Newton. “The revolution has always been in the hands of the young. The young always inherit the revolution,” it reads. The next frame updates, “Defund the police. Arrest and convict the killer cops.” Before it fades to black, the names Jacob Blake, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Elijah McClain appear. Cordae has spent the summer utilizing his platform as an artist to be in vocal support of the Black Lives Matter movement in America — he was arrested and initially charged with a felony while protesting Breonna Taylor’s death by peacefully sitting on the lawn outside of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s house with a group of people.
