ASICS Reinvents the Past With New GEL-KYRIOS Sneaker
Combining elements of the GEL-HELIOS and GEL-KIRIL together for a retro running aesthetic.
Japanese sportswear giant ASICS has unveiled the all-new GEL-KYRIOS, its latest retro-inspired runner that draws from the label’s rich archive.
The GEL-KYRIOS takes influences from the GEL-HELIOS from 2005 and 2006, and updates the OG pair with tooling taken from the GEL-KIRIL, all while preserving many original features. For example, the upper remains as retro as possible with the use of layered mesh and synthetic leather coming together for a classic running aesthetic, while the sole unit has been reinvented using FLYTEFOAM Propel system and GEL technology cushioning in the heel.
An exaggerated traction pattern on the outsole has also been implemented, making the shoe’s new sole unit perform in all kinds of conditions while running. Kenichi Kawano, who designed both the GEL-HELIOS and the GEL-KYRIOS, said in a press statement, “I wanted to reimagine its key functionality features with modernized components that appeal to today’s performance running trend in street style. We pulled various design elements from the original GEL-HELIOS trainer to create a heritage-inspired silhouette with advanced tooling.”

The GEL-KYRIOS is launching in two signature colorways, “White/Black” with blue stripe detailing, and “Black/White” with red detailing. ASICS will also be later releasing three other versions that adopt fluo yellow, black, and light gray color schemes. The sneaker’s best angle is its rear, where the stripes come together in a wavy pattern and wrap around a circular “GEL” logo.
