The Weeknd Taps Black-Owned Anime Studio D'Art Shtajio For "Snowchild" Music Video
An action-filled look back at the artist’s career.
Continuing to build on the ongoing popularity of his After Hours album, The Weeknd has now released a music video for “Snowchild.” Straying away from the cinematic visuals released for other tracks off the project, the Canadian artist tapped anime studio D’Art Shtajio to animate the music video.
It is important to note that D’Art Shtajio, founded by Arthell Isom, Darnell Isom, and Henry Thurlow, back in 2016 stands as the first Black-owned animation studio in Japan.
The animated visual plays off of the lyrics of “Snowchild” which sees The Weeknd lookback at his meteoric rise. Showcasing the different phases of Abel Tesfaye, we get a look at the iconic House of Balloons era, the moment of Kiss Land and Beauty Behind the Madness, moving into his Starboy phase. Progressing through the stages, scenes of action are spliced in to represent his struggles leading into the distinct reimagination seen in the latest After Hours release persona.
