“This frame is completely different from the one before the moment. We are in the midst of an awakening,” reads the JULIUS Spring/Summer 2021 collection press release, comprised of earth-toned clothing that recall a cross between Jedi outfits and fairy tale nomads. Originally titled “Harvest,” the collection was renamed “[ mamuthones; ]” in light of the coronavirus pandemic, reflecting a more moody theme: ancient Italian pagan deities that the Japanese brand describes as “messengers of the god of harvest in this world. A spirit that mourns for all sadness.”

Like Fall/Winter 2020 “[ DUKKHA; ],” “[ mamuthones; ]” offers proportion-shifting layers rich with texture granted by organic fabrics. Anchored by JULIUS’ heavyweight boots, woven cardigans, lengthy linen coats and enormous hoodies shroud the wearer’s torso while drop crotch shorts and cropped easy pants offer comfort amidst the summer heat. Distressed knitwear appears throughout, lending a rough-hewn edge to the wrinkly military blousons, oversized graphic T-shirts and the Japanese brand’s shortened leather jackets.

“In ["Harvest"], the concept of happiness permeated instantaneously, reestablishing its meaning,” explained the JULIUS team in the statement. “It was a fertile world where fresh young leaves sprouted chaotically, a magnificent restoration of spirituality. … But as we experience an unprecedented catastrophe, everything is changed. Even the individual must rethink its position and develop a whole new organic bond with the world. However, there is a chance for many people to become awakened by this disaster. A society driven insane by consumerism is about to freeze and be reborn into an organic form.”

Learn more about the brand on JULIUS’ website and expect the new collection to hit stockists like SSENSE, FASCINATE and Antonioli.

Elsewhere, four wholly different Japanese brands issued their own SS21 looks during digital Paris Fashion Week.
