Two Large Horizontal Cuts Define Jim Caumeron Design's Tagaytay Retreat Home

Named the “Panorama House.”

Located three hours away from Manila in Tagaytay, Philippines is the Jim Caumeron-designed Panorama House. The compact 100-square-meter home chooses to selectively give the owner views of the area depending on which level they are on. Two large horizontal cuts allow for ventilation and extended space on the bottom and offer an elevated view of the neighborhood at the top; the two combined increase wind circulation throughout the house.

As the family has children, the entrance space just before the living room was made into a sleeping area for afternoon naps — a Filipino tradition. The minimal home continues to make use of natural light with slate/white walls, natural wood and ample glass. Everything about the home plays into the climate experienced in the Philippines as seen in the living and dining areas which have both been built into a 1.5-meter drop in the plot, and in the high ceilings which allow for warm air to rise and exit the home.

Short design description: The horizontal cuts try to open the house on all four sides despite the lack of scenic views inside the gated village. Instead, the openings attempt to create cutout views of the surroundings. The living area is sunken for an eye-level view of the park across the street. The diagonal cut of the second floor is meant to direct natural air flow, activate passive cooling and dissipate heat during summer months.
