Watch Russell Wilson, Megan Rapinoe & More Unite Against Racial Injustice at 2020 ESPYS
The five-minute video highlights the Black Lives Matter movement.
The 2020 ESPYS took place on Sunday and alongside revealing this year’s honorees, the awards show highlighted the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. In a video starring Russell Wilson, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, the athletes highlighted the need for continued action in the fight against racial injustice following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black individuals.
Wilson starts off by spotlighting several prominent Black athletes who have been both excellent in their sports and vocal about equality during their respective eras. He shared pertinent details about the legacies of Jackie Robinson (first Black man in major league baseball), Bill Russell (first Black NBA head coach), Muhammad Ali, and Serena Williams, recapping their impact and courage to speak up.
“What if we didn’t know their names? What if they were never part of the conversation,” Wilson asks before transitioning to reflections on Floyd, Arbery and Taylor. “The only thing that must die is racism. Black Lives Matter.”
Fellow athletes Rapinoe and Bird continue the conversation as they join the video, with Rapino stating that it is “important that we keep this dialogue going and this energy alive.” Bird doubles down on the overall sentiment, exclaiming: “Do black lives matter to you when they’re not throwing touchdowns? Grabbing rebounds? Serving aces? If that was uncomfortable to hear good.”
